FIFA 18 Official Gamescom Trailer
You only have to look at the stacked list of top-tier players to have adorned the cover in recent years - Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho, Alessandro Del Piero, Roberto Carlos, Patrick Vieira, Lionel Messi, Marco Reus to name a few.
There has also been a strong English presence on the game's cover, with the likes of Sol Campbell, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Joe Hart, Frank Lampard, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson all being the face of the FIFA franchise at some point in their careers.
Liverpool skipper Henderson was the most recent inclusion on the FIFA cover, featuring on the FIFA 16 cover alongside Lionel Messi as part of a public vote hosted by EA Sports prior to the game's release.
As per usual, there had been the customary 'leaks' of who will be getting the nod on the front cover this year. Back in March, The Mirror reported that Dele Alli, who has had quite the meteoric rise in recent years, was slated to be one of the faces.
There was also the suggestion that Manchester United's Paul Pogba was set to grace the cover of FIFA 18.
However the official announcement from EA Sports has arrived today, confirming that Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh from winning the Champions League for the fourth time in his career courtesy of a 4-1 win over Juventus in Cardiff on Saturday, is this year's cover star.
The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has never been on the cover of the game prior to this game, and the move continues his run as a marketing machine by becoming the face of the FIFA franchise as well as a global ambassador.
Speaking about becoming the cover star for the most popular football game in the world for the first time in his career, the 32-year old said:
"It is a real pleasure to be on the cover of FIFA 18, It's a great feeling and I am grateful to have been chosen."
A special 'Ronaldo Edition' of FIFA 18 will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC and those who purchase the special version will receive benefits such as three days of early access, 20 jumbo premium gold packs on FIFA Ultimate Team, eight specially designed kits and the ability to loan CR7 for five games on Ultimate Team.
Even better, the more costly 'Icon Edition', sees you get three of the same parks in the form of special kits, three days early access and Ronaldo on loan, but you also get the 'original' Ronaldo on loan for five games.
The game is slated in for worldwide release on September 29.
